AMD’s Ryzen 9000 CPUs were delayed for the most ridiculous reason

It was quite surprising last week when AMD announced a delay in the release of its Ryzen 9000 CPUs by up to two weeks. Now,we may have some insight into the reasons behind this last-minute decision.A review on BilliBilli revealed the Ryzen 7 9700X labeled incorrectly as a Ryzen 9 9700X—a typo that also appeared on the Ryzen 5 7600X,which carried the same Ryzen 9 branding, according to Tom’s Hardware.

AMD has not provided a detailed explanation for the delay, only citing an issue with packaging.Originally, the range of four CPUs was scheduled to launch on July 31.However,AMD has decided to stagger the release dates. The Ryzen 5 9600X and Ryzen 7 9700X will now be released on August 8,while the Ryzen 9 9900X and Ryzen 9 9950X will follow on August 15.The decision to split the launch lends some credibility to the theory that the delay was due to the incorrect labeling on the lower-end models.

Given that these mislabeled CPUs have surfaced,it’s reasonable to conclude that the incorrect naming played a significant role in AMD’s decision to recall the initial batch. However, this might not be the sole reason for the delay. There is some speculation that AMD might be addressing other issues with the Ryzen 9000 series, especially in light of Intel’s challenges with its 13th-gen and 14th-gen CPUs.Nevertheless, there is currently no evidence to suggest a deeper quality issue with the Ryzen 9000 series.

AMD has recalled all the CPUs from the initial batch for re-screening,including both boxed retail units and those in prebuilt systems. The company initiated the recall before announcing the delay.Given the short delay period—one week for the Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 models, and two weeks for the Ryzen 9 models—it seems the problem was limited in scope and only affected the first shipment of these CPUs.

As a result of the delay, the reviews for these CPUs have also been postponed.Hardware Unboxed has indicated that reviews will be published one day before each model’s release:August 7 for the Ryzen 5 9600X and Ryzen 7 9700X,and August 14 for the Ryzen 9 9900X and Ryzen 9 9950X.

While a typo might seem like a minor issue,it could cause significant problems for AMD if not addressed, hence the necessity for the delay and recall.
