North American Robotics Sales Declined in First Half of 2024

The robotics industry, despite its high demand, hasn’t been immune to the effects of global economic challenges.Robotics sales in North America dropped in the first half of 2024.This information comes from the Association for Advancing Automation(A3).This decline happened in both units sold and revenue earned.

In the first half of 2024,orders for industrial robots fell by 7.5%compared to last year. This brought the total to 15,705 units.Revenue also dropped by 6.8%,reaching$982.83 million.A3 attributes this decline to the broader economic pressures faced by manufacturers, including rising costs and inflation.

  Industry-Specific Insights

The automotive sector, the largest user of industrial robotics, presented mixed results.Original Equipment Manufacturers(OEMs)increased orders by 14.4%,but revenue fell by 12%.For automotive components manufacturers, the outlook was more negative, with sales plummeting 38.8%and revenue dropping 27.3%.

The semiconductor industry faced significant challenges.Orders dropped by 40%,and revenue fell by 41.4%.This was mainly because of ongoing supply chain problems.

  Historical Context and Silver Linings

The drop in 2024 follows a trend of declining sales after the pandemic surge. In 2023,robotics orders dropped 30%year-over-year to 31,159,after hitting 44,196 in 2022 and 39,708 in 2021.

However, there were some bright spots.A3 President Jeff Burnstein says that some industries are still investing in automation.

These industries include food, consumer goods, and life sciences. They do this to improve efficiency and productivity.Life sciences experienced a 47.9%rise in sales and an impressive 86.7%increase in revenue.Meanwhile, the food and consumer goods sector saw orders grow by 85.6%and revenue rise by 56.2%.

Burnstein emphasized that despite economic challenges, the push for automation and operational efficiency will continue, making robotics a key component of future industry growth.

  Conclusion

Although the robotics market has faced setbacks, primarily because of economic headwinds, the long-term outlook remains positive.Automation is important for many industries.Although growth may slow down for a while,it is unlikely to stop completely.
