Qualcomm’s new smartphone chip will make cheap 5G phones better than ever

Qualcomm is enhancing its portfolio with a new entry-level smartphone chip, the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2,set to debut in phones by late 2024.This silicon,a slightly scaled-down version of the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 processor, brings significant improvements in connectivity and camera capabilities for budget Android phones.

The Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 offers downlink speeds up to 1Gbps,significantly faster than the 4G-only chips available in the same price range. It supports video stabilization and multi-frame noise reduction, enhancing photo and video quality. The chip can handle up to 84-megapixel single-camera image capture and FHD video recording at 60 frames per second.Built on a 4nm process,it features an octa-core setup with two performance cores running at 2GHz.

Compared to the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2,the 4s Gen 2 supports up to 90Hz refresh rates, lower than the 120Hz supported by the 4 Gen 2.It only supports LPDDR4X RAM,which is about 30%slower than the LPDDR5 supported by its predecessor. The new variant does not support global 5G multi-SIM capability, and its performance and efficiency cores are slightly slower compared to those in the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2.

The Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 also supports Qualcomm’s aptX Adaptive audio and Aqstic audio codec for high-resolution music streaming at up to 96kHz.It is equipped with Sub-6GHz 5G,Wi-Fi 5,and Bluetooth 5.1,and includes Qualcomm QuickCharge 4+technology and dual-frequency GPS.

Qualcomm has announced that Xiaomi will be one of the first brands to use the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2.The chip aims to make 5G accessible to approximately 2.8 billion smartphone users worldwide. It will be intriguing to see if brands like TCL and Motorola adopt this chip for North American markets.Qualcomm faces competition from MediaTek,which is gaining market share with its Dimensity 6000 series 5G processors, popular among Chinese smartphone manufacturers in key Asian markets.

The Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 represents a strategic move by Qualcomm to bolster its presence in the entry-level smartphone segment, offering enhanced features at a competitive price point.
